Paid with a bill with Davíð on it

Police in the Greater Reykjavík Area are now investigating a unique case of counterfeiting. A man walked into a convenience store on Monday and paid for his purchases using a ten thousand króna bill. On the bill was a picture of Central Bank of Iceland Governer Davíð Oddsson.

Staff at the shop paid no better attention than to give the man change for the bill, just under seven thousand króna. The police now has possession of the bill, along with footage from the store's security camera. Finding the counterfeiter should therefore be easy.

Afgreiðslufólk verslunarinnar var ekki betur vakandi en svo að það gaf manninum til baka, tæpar sjö þúsund krónur. Lögregla hefur nú fengið seðilinn í hendur ásamt upptöku úr öryggismyndavél verslunarinnar. Leiðin að falsaranum ætti því að vera greið.

Record print run for new Arnaldur Indriðason book (RÚV 31.10.08)

Mýrka, Arnaldur Indriðason's new book on the adventures of Erlendur & Co., will be released tomorrow. 30,000 copies of the book have been printed, an Icelandic record. Never before have as many copies of a book been printed. Over 5 million copies of books by Arnaldur Indriðason have been sold abroad. Jóhann Páll Valdimarsson predicts record book sales this Christmas and says there is no downturn when it comes to book sales.

The north wind doth blow..

Christmas is a migratory season for the Icelandic Blue Duck, who will soon be heading south for milder climes as is its wont. But blue ducks are not the only things flying around these days in the skies of Reykjavík..

Other identified flying objects from last night's storm include a refridgerator and a large chunk of the roof of Austurbæjarskóli school, which subsequently migrated onto the roof of a parked car.

Our third storm this week is due to hit tomorrow.

Storm update: Óveður ("not-weather" i.e., weather that is worse than weather, i.e., storm) continues. Many things flying. Parents in Greater Reykjavík Area told not to send children to school. All morning flights from Keflavík cancelled. Also, incidentally, the date of Blue Duck's ONLY exam this fall... typical that it would be in the worst windstorm of the year!

Snjókornin falla!

It's þvílíkt jólalegt here á Ísland, where it's been snowing great big gorgeous soft white flakes á allt og alla for maybe not all but at least most of the day... could there be a snowball in your near future?

UPDATE: Typical. 1 hour prior to snowball fight a rainstorm came and well, rained on our parade by raining away all the snow :( So to compensate...

... finnst ykkur allt í lagi að endurútgefa barnabók sem inniheldur myndir á borð við þessa?!?


















Undanfarið hefur verið mikið rætt um endurútgáfuna á bókinni sem inniheldur þessa æðislega mynd og fleiri sem má skoða hér. Sumir verja bókina eins og hér væri um að ræða sjálfa Njálu og ekki einhverja þýðingu úr ensku (Ten Little Niggers) sem telst vera algjörlega úreld á frummáli. Umræðan snýst mest um textann og þá sérstaklega hvort "negri" sé niðrandi orð eða ekki. Um það ætla ég ekki að tala hér þar sem ég hef ekki móðurmálstilfinningu í íslensku og er sjálf ekki "negri" (þó mér finnst það pínulítið óvenjulegt að vera að verja þetta orð af svona mikilli ákefð í útvarpinu þar sem það er *ahem* tökuorð).

Ég held nú ekki að kynþáttahatur hafi legið að baki þessum teikningum þegar bókin var fyrst gefin út árið 1922. Og ekki að íslensk börn hafi orðið fordómafull með því að lesa þessa bók. Alls ekki. En hverjum dettur í hug að ENDURútgefa svona barnabók árið 2007 þegar allt að 28% krakka á leikskólum eru af erlendum uppruna (skv. tölunum á vefi Reykjavíkurborgar) Þegar Reykjavík er farin að auglýsa sér sem "fjölmenningaborg barna"?

Bækur endurútgefa ekki sjálfar sig eins og ég uppgötvaði um daginn þegar ég reyndi að kaupa einhverjar bækur um köttinn Brand fyrir bókasafnið mitt (eftirspurn eftir hann er nefnilega gríðalegt). Ég hringdi alls staðar og spurði um bókina. Ég hringdi meira að segja í fornbókabúð á Akureyri. En kötturinn fannst hvergi.

Enda er það miklu einfaldara að ekki gefa út bók en að gefa hana út. Og fullt af skemmtilegum íslenskum barnabókum sem eru ekki lengur fáanlegar í búðum. Það er jú hægt fyrir bók að úreldast. Það þarf ekkert að fara að banna og brenna þessar bækur - þær hafa sögulegt gildi og forvitni lesandinn verður enginn Klúi Kluxerson með því að blaða í þeim.

En ætli þessi bók sé ekki ein af þeim sem er best leitað að í fornbókabúðum og ekki í leikskólum? Það er ekki hægt að komast hjá því að þessir "negrastrákar" eru teiknaðir sem vansköpuð skrýmsli. Slíkar 19. aldar staðalímyndir eru ógeðfelldar og óviðeigandi í bók ætluð krökkum í nútímasamfélagi á 21. öld.
